As part of the 2016-17 Budget, a number of Encouraging Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment initiatives will commence on Monday 5 December 2016 including:
- Broadening of NEIS Eligibility – this will mean that job seekers not in employment, education or training who can work in Australia can participate in NEIS. NEIS Participants no longer need to be registered with a jobactive, ParentsNext or Disability Employment Services (DES) provider and do not need to be in receipt of an income support payment.
- An additional 2,300 NEIS Places – this takes the total number of NEIS Places from 6,300 to 8,600 nationally each financial year (or 7642 places prorated for 2016‑17).
- Exploring Being My Own Boss Workshops – provide 1,000 participants per year with a taste of what is involved in running their own business. The two-week Workshops (25 hours per week) will be delivered by a number of existing New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) providers.
- Complementary Placements – provide 500 places a year to job seekers who complete a Workshop, are registered with a jobactive or DES provider and meet the eligibility for an existing Activity(for example NWEP). This placement is to provide eligible job seekers with first-hand experience on what it is like to run a small business. NEIS providers will be responsible for identifying an appropriate placement and jobactive/DES providers will continue to be responsible for placing the job seeker into an Activity and undertaking all of the required checks. jobactive and DES providers are encouraged to work with NEIS providers to enable job seekers to take up these placements.
