From Employee to Entrepreneur: Chloe Flemming’s Journey on the Self-Employment Assistance program

It has been a pleasure working with Chloe over the past year as she draws towards the end of her small business coaching program. We were delighted albeit not suprised to see her success and thought it was worth sharing!  Chloe is a passionate and dedicated clinical social worker who has transformed her extensive experience in the mental health field into her own thriving practice, Create Change Counselling. After two decades of working in hospitals, community teams, and government departments, Chloe embarked on a new journey with the help of the Self-Employment Assistance program.

A Strong Foundation

Chloe’s journey began with a solid academic background, having earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in psychology and sociology in 2001, followed by a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Sydney in 2003. Her commitment to professional growth and excellence is evident through her accreditation as a Clinical Social Worker (ACSW), ensuring she stays updated with the latest evidence-based treatments.

Her career kicked off at Sutherland Hospital in Sydney, where she provided invaluable support to patients and their families. This experience laid the groundwork for her subsequent roles, including five years in the UK, where she worked at The Royal London Hospital and within community-based physical disabilities teams. Upon returning to Australia, Chloe took on pivotal roles with the Department of Human Services and Services Australia, advocating for and counseling some of the nation’s most vulnerable individuals.

Taking the Leap

After years of dedicated service, Chloe decided it was time to launch her own practice. The Self-Employment Assistance program offered her the support she needed to turn her vision into reality. With guidance and mentorship, Chloe was able to navigate the challenges of starting a business, from refining her business plan to developing marketing strategies.

“I am happy with the support I received from ABS,” Chloe shares. “The meetings helped me stay focused on my business and not get lost in client work. They pushed me forward and kept me accountable.”

Building a Collaborative Network

One of the most exciting opportunities that arose during Chloe’s journey was her collaboration with a consultant specializing in NDIS management and support coordination. This partnership opened doors for her to connect with community groups and potential clients, particularly those with acquired brain injuries. Through these connections, Chloe is poised to offer both individual therapy and support coordination, further expanding her impact in the community.

Chloe has embraced modern marketing strategies, leveraging content creation to enhance her online presence. She dedicates Sundays to crafting engaging posts and reels using Canva, scheduling them for 9 AM every morning. This consistent engagement not only raises awareness about her services but also builds a supportive community around her practice.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Chloe’s philosophy is rooted in a holistic understanding of mental wellness. She believes in addressing the psychological, physical, social, spiritual, and emotional aspects of an individual’s life. Her warm and genuine therapeutic style fosters a collaborative environment, allowing clients to set their goals and tailor their treatment to their unique needs.

Reflecting on the Journey

As Chloe reflects on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of community and support in her success. “The Self-Employment Assistance program has been instrumental in helping me refocus on my business,” she says. With her clear vision and hard work, Chloe is not only transforming her life but also making a profound difference in the lives of her clients through Create Change Counselling.
